History
In 1953, Norm Larsen and his 2 collaborators invented WD-40. Though initially developed for the NASA space program, it became clear very quickly that this magical can had thousands of applications. A legend was born.
Available in more than 160 countries, it has become one of the most imitated products in history.

Five essential functions, more than 2000 listed uses
It seems impossible, but just try it!
The following pages will explain to you in detail how this yellow and blue tool works.
The aim of WD-40 is to make this product available to the greatest number of users, from the most demanding professional to the private user who wants to prolong the life of his possessions.
MORE THAN 180 MILLION CANS SOLD WORLDWIDE
A liquid "Swiss army knife"
THE AEROSOL THAT DOES IT ALL!
WD-40 has thousands of uses
Whether it is unjamming, lubricating, getting rid of moisture, protection from corrosion or cleaning. A professional product, developed at first for NASA, it has many fields of application: industry, automotive, hardware, marine, agriculture and many more.
Some examples of its uses
Freeing of jammed screws and taps, protection of tools and equipment, lubricating moving parts and maintenance of locks. The applications are endless.
How is it possible ?
Thanks to a perfect combination of the highest quality chemical components!
WD-40 can be used with full confidence on all metals and plastic materials, is non conductive and uses CO2 as propellant which makes it much safer to use than propane or butane filled aerosols.
More Than 180 Million Cans Sold Worldwide
Every year that is!
No doubt, this blue and yellow can has conquered the world and millions of users will testify to its superior quality.
But, apart from the superior quality of the product, WD-40 has some additional unique features.
1. CO2 Filling
- Most aerosol cans are filled with LPG whereas WD-40 is filled with CO2.
- Cans filled with LPG contain gas, liquid propellant and product.
- CO2 cans only contain product and CO2 .
- The benefit of this is that CO2 filled cans always contain more product than LPG filled cans.
- Also, CO2 is safer and less flammable than LPG which, when sprayed on hot surfaces, is a big advantage.
2. The Blue Dot !
- WD-40 wants customers to have maximum benefit from the product and to make sure that all the liquid can be used.
- How to get all the liquid out of the can?? Simple, just always direct the nozzle towards the blue dot.
- This will assure that the curved dip tube will always touch the bottom of the can. Simple, isn't it?
5 FUNCTIONS
Water Dispersant
WD-40’s HIGH ATTRACTION TO METAL allows a perfect moisture-proof barrier to be formed. WD-40 penetrates beneath the moisture on metal repelling it and completely covering all surfaces.
Thus WD-40 quickly eliminates electrical short circuits caused by moisture.
Corrosion Inhibitor
THE FILM FORMED BY WD-40 ENSURES PROTECTION
against water, humidity and their corrosive effects. WD-40 moisture displacement capability also thoroughly “dries” the treated surface giving ultimate protection against future corrosion problems.
Cleaning
ON ANY NON POROUS SURFACE, WD-40 EASILY REMOVES grease grime, and grunge. WD-40 penetrates beneath the dirt eliminating it, without depositing any corrosive agents.
WD-40 can be used on all metallic and plastic surfaces.
Penetrate
WD-40 PENETRATES AND FREES JAMMED PARTS, loosening rusted, corroded or frozen mechanisms. The extreme fluidity of WD-40 allows it to quickly penetrate by capillary action into the finest irregularities of the metal surface and lift rust and corrosion.
The strong surface attraction of WD-40 to metal and its lubricating properties, ensure continued smooth functioning of the freed parts.
Lubricant
ONE OF THE MAIN INGREDIENTS OF WD-40 IS AN ACTIVE AND PERMANENT LUBRICANT. WD-40 contains no silicone, lanoline or any other additive which would attract dust or dirt.
Parts and mechanisms are thus cleanly lubricated.
